Amount more than 40,000 teens surveyed, they found:
1. 60% who worry a lot about” get good grades in school”
2. 44% who worry a lot about “how I look”
3. 33% who worry a lot about “get along with their parents”
4. 31% who worry a lot about “get good job after high school”
5. 22% who worry a lot about “fit in with others in school”
6. 55% of the females surveyed, how they look is a major concern.
Survey also finds that what worries young teens may be quite different than what worries older teens. Young adolescent may be more concerned about fitting in with others while older teens are more worried about getting a good job or going to college after high school. As older teens may be more likely to feel comfortable with their own decisions, they may not be as influenced by their peers as younger teenagers who are more worried about being pressured into having sex or using drugs or alcohol:
1. 11% of 7-8th grades said they worry a lot about “pressure to have sex” compared to 6% of 11-12th grades.
2. 13% of 7-8th grades said they worry a lot about “pressure to drink/use drugs” compared to 5% of 11-12th grades.
3. 27% of 7-8th grades said they worry a lot about “fit in with others in school” compared to 16% from 11-12th grades.
4. 28% of 7-8th grades said they worry a lot about “get good job after high school” compared to 38% found in 11-12th grades.
Teenagers are often expected to act more mature in social situations, as well as take on more responsibilities. The expectations of adult behavior along with behaving in ways to attract someone they want to date may put tremendous pressure on young teens. Understanding the pressures and worries your teenagers are experiencing may help parents maintain effective communication and develop more tolerant attitude towards their teenagers during what might be a turbulent time for everyone in the family.
So get help with raising teenagers, first try to understand what worries them.
